Q: I heard that there is no difference between using a light and gel to perform the whitening treatment and just using the whitening gel without a light. Is this true?

- From China

A: Numerous clinical studies have been conducted to determine if the use of a light source during whitening treatments does indeed accelerate the process and produce superior whitening results. A 2003 study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) titled Light Augments Tooth Whitening with Peroxide concluded that, “Light can increase the tooth-whitening effect of peroxide, thereby increasing the effectiveness of tooth whitening procedures.”2

Using a light in conjunction with a peroxide gel also reduces total treatment time, thereby reducing the amount of time that the whitening gel is on the patient’s teeth. This reduces the risk of sensitivity associated with the treatment, increasing patient satisfaction.

We have also found that there are more consistent results when using light and gel compared with only gel. By using light and gel together, you are ensuring that more patients reach his or her optimal whitening results than if gel alone was used.

Teeth whitening can be performed without the use of a light. However, for the best results and shorter treatment times, using a combination of light and gel to whiten teeth is the most effective means for whitening teeth.
