Continuing Education for Dentists: Realizing Your Practice’s Full Whitening Potential

As you’ve probably already guessed, we’re passionate about teeth whitening here at BEYOND™. Watching a patient’s face light up when they see their new, white smile following a treatment is extremely rewarding and we want to see as many patients as possible realize their full smile potential!

Tooth whitening is the most in-demand cosmetic dental service in the U.S. right now. However many dental offices have yet to realize their full potential for this treatment. Oftentimes, patients don’t know that the service is offered, or are afraid to ask about the service because they want to avoid an overzealous sales pitch that will pressure them into doing the treatment without having thought it through.

So how can you start promoting this service in your own practice? A few simple questions or comments interjected into your regular conversations with patients will plant the seed in their mind and get them thinking about the treatment.

Train your staff to perform these simple steps during patient consultations or while performing routine cleanings:

  1. Ask every patient, "If there was a simple and quick way for you to have whiter teeth, would you be interested?"
  2. Begin hygiene appointments by taking a shade assessment of all patients. Show the patient their current color (or if it has changed since their last appointment) using a shade guide arranged in chromatic order.
  3. Recommend whitening to all patients scheduled for restorative treatment so that the dentist will be able to match to their ideal foundation shade. Explain they will not be able to whiten their teeth post-restoration without re-matching the restoration.

Training your staff to remember to perform these steps can take some time. Keep stressing the importance of building up this important business opportunity in staff meetings and set an attainable goal (such as performing one whitening a day) that everyone can work towards.

Q: Can someone with diabetes undergo the BEYOND™ treatment?

- From the U.S.A.

A: Diabetics are at a higher risk of experiencing gum problems because of poor blood glucose control. For any clients who have diabetes, we would recommend performing an oral health check-up before the treatment to determine that their gums are healthy.
