Monthly Marketing Idea: Live Demonstrations in the Dental Office
Who doesn’t love testing out a new product before committing to buying it? It’s human nature to want to see something in person before committing to anything. Whether it’s a new jacket, a new computer, or a piece of dental equipment – we have all learned that advertisements can sometimes exaggerate and that it’s better to see something in person before you buy it.
When approaching a dental office to sell the BEYOND™ Whitening System to them, it’s important that the dentist is convinced of the simplicity of the BEYOND™ treatment – and of the enormous profit potential that the BEYOND™ system will bring to their practice.
Even though the BEYOND™ treatment can only be performed by a trained dental professional, this shouldn’t stop you from giving your potential client the opportunity to see the BEYOND™ system in action. We have found that actually bringing the whitening accelerator and setting it up in the dental office to do a live demonstration is a highly-effective marketing technique. It’s made even more effective by actually asking the dentist to perform the treatment themselves. You can stand there and talk them through the treatment step-by-step and they get the opportunity to see firsthand the simple treatment procedure and the amazing whitening results.
Think about the last time you went shopping. Were you more likely to buy the product that had a model available to test out? Or the one behind a glass case that the salespeople refused to open up so that you could see it closer?
Walking a dentist through such a simple treatment is an excellent way to reinforce the simplicity and efficacy of the Beyond system.
Did you know that all non-consumable BEYOND™ products come with a three-year manufacturer’s warranty? They do! All electronic components have a complete three-year warranty against manufacturer’s defect. Each device includes a warranty card that can be filled out and sent in or each dental office can list their clinic on our website and include the serial number of their device to automatically register for the warranty. Hydrogen Peroxide vs. Carbamide Peroxide: What’s the Difference?
The two most common active ingredients in teeth whitening are hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide (sometimes called urea peroxide). While the two are very closely related, there are several differences that should be highlighted in explaining why certain manufacturers use hydrogen peroxide and others use carbamide peroxide.
Hydrogen peroxide is “pure” hydrogen peroxide. In other words, it is not combined with any other chemicals. During use, it breaks down into water and oxygen while penetrating through the tooth enamel and breaking apart the longer carbon chain molecules that cause visible stains in the teeth. This oxidizing process is what causes the “whitening” effect.
Carbamide peroxide is hydrogen peroxide dissolved in urea crystals. As a result of the combination of hydrogen peroxide and urea, it is less powerful, weight by weight, than "pure" hydrogen peroxide. Although carbamide peroxide still has hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient, it has to undergo one more step before it can whiten. This extra step means that carbamide peroxide will act more slowly and will need to be on the teeth for longer.
Hydrogen peroxide is highly reactive and is effective for only about 30-60 minutes once it has been released from its suspended phase. By adding urea, it becomes more stable and can be stored for longer periods. However, it only releases about 50% of its active ingredient in the first two hours. The rest is released over the next 4 to 6 hours.
In general, hydrogen peroxide products are used for short daytime use and carbamide peroxide is used for longer overnight periods. In order to provide the most rapid and effective whitening treatment, all BEYOND™ whitening gels contain hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient. This shortens our treatment times, but it also means that following the proper storage instructions for the whitening gels is very important. (See the Dec. 2007 BEYOND™ Messenger for more detailed instructions on storing BEYOND™ whitening gels.)

Q: Is the syringe supposed to be used entirely for one patient?
- From the U.S.A.
A: Each syringe contains enough gel for four, 10 minute applications. The extra gel is for a fourth, 10 minute cycle for those patients with severe stains from tetracycline and fluoride. If you have a patient with severe stains, you will want to split the treatment up over two days and perform two, 10 minute applications on the first day and an additional two, 10 minute applications the next day. Depending on the severity of his or her stains, you may also want to pre-treat their teeth with our BEYOND™ Boost manual mix, extra-strength whitening paste.* To store the extra gel in between treatments, you'll want to remove the mixing tip and replace the original cap that came on the syringe and store it in the fridge until you're ready to use it. You can't use the mixing tips again because the old, inactive gel left in the mixing tip will cause the active gel in the syringe to break down as it comes into contact with the old gel in the tip. Extra mixing tips can be ordered directly from BEYOND™ or from your BEYOND™ products distributor.
